Week one search data

November 2nd, 2008

After our first week of operation we had more than 2k unique visitors and I figured we could look at some of the data.

The most interesting part was that a large percentage of the folks that used the service actually searched nothing… No, I am not talking about bouncing, they actually submitted a search with NO QUERY term. Weird….

The top terms for the week

  • ‘SEO/seo’ – not sure if this was peeps kicking the tires, or looking to see who’s ranking, but it was the most common search term
  • ‘PPC’ – another generalized term, but it ranked second among those searching SSP.
  • ‘Link building’ – definitely one we’d expect to see considering it’s importance and the need for new ideas (‘links’ and ‘link bait’ also got some traction).
  • ‘PR Sculpting’ – interesting that the older ‘sioling’ is nowhere and it’s newer incarnation is the lone representative.
  • ‘302 redirect’ – was this in the news this week or something? There weren’t a of them, but still strange to see it top 10.
  • ‘Analytics’ – another interesting one considering how little play it had in SEO not so long ago.

Strange but true

Here are some of the more interesting, if not down-right strange queries from the week – make of it what you will;

  • Obama
  • Digital shredder
  • Ford mustang
  • Guitar
  • Hotel
  • She told five friends
  • Winter boots

My personal fav is the ‘5 friends’ one… WTF is that all about?

Outside of those there were more than a few searches for company names and people as well. Just in case those were vanity searches, I won’t be reporting on them; but there are more than a few. If you’re one of those peeps searching for yourself, get in touch for potential inclusion in the next round of additions.

Until next time, keep on searching!

Latest Additions - Oct. 30th

October 30th, 2008

Ok, we alread have some new additions as can be expected over the next while. As mentioned elsewhere this is a work in progress and there are likely many great SEOs we haven’t covered yet… so additions may be fast and furious for the next while.

Latest Additions;

Internet Business Blog - Brian Turner is a great fellow that I’ve known and admired for a few years now. From the days of ThreadWatch to hanging on his forums, Brian has always been a top shelf SEO. He gave me a gentle nudge and I only hope I’m still on the Xmas card list ;0)

Search Engine RoundTable - after a chat with the terrifically tantalizing Tamar today, I realized that she, Barry and the rest of the gang at SER were not represented - that’s been corrected. They report on all the latest industry news and have the ultimate SEO forum watch. For the latest SEO news…. they’re the best!

TechiPedia - and yes Tamar, we luvs U. Although she has all but left us for the glamour of Social Media, one cannot take away the volumes of great SEO writing done on TP. And so, not to furter incur the wrath of Tamar - we sheepishly have added her.

The Other Bloke’s Blog - another fellow I spoke with was Barry Welford; another timeless SEO communicator. Barry is likely best known as an old time forum hound just like yours truly. While Barry has a few blogs, we decided to go with this one if not for the name alone - rest assured the content is great as well!! Welcome aboard BW…

And that’s it for today’s edition - look for more soon.
